Animal Health Tech Update -- Spring 2013 Over the past decade there have been increasing reports of worm resistance to cattle drenches from around the world. Recent surveys have found drench resistance on up to 94% of beef cattle properties tested in New Zealand1, and on up to 92% of cattle properties tested in South America,2 70% in Northern Europe3 and 44% in the USA.4 Drench resistance in cattle worms is also being increasingly reported in Australia. ML resistance has been found in Cooperia, Ostertagia and Haemonchus in cattle in south east QLD14 and on up to 63% of properties in trials conducted in VIC5 and WA.6 "Everywhere the industry has looked they've found drench resistance in cattle," says Managing Director of Herd Health, Dr Richard Shepherd. With more and more field studies and worm counts being conducted, it is becoming apparent that drench resistant cattle parasites are growing in numbers. Drench resistance can result in poor growth rates for some time before overt signs of disease are seen,7 with field trials indicating that young cattle can lose 10% or more of production due to gastrointestinal worms without any obvious signs.8,9 Recently published research indicated that on some resistance-affected properties, the producers were not aware of the impact resistant worms were having until they trialled a combination drench and observed a substantial production response.10 In fact, none of the 19 properties tested in WA6 and only 1 of the 13 properties in a recent Victorian study 5 had expressed any concerns about drench efficacy in their cattle prior to those studies being conducted. With ineffective worm control potentially costing more than 20-30 kg per animal in lost production, without any obvious signs of disease, it is even more important to get drenching right.8 ECLIPSE --- Combining two powerful actives to manage resistance ECLIPSE Pour-On combines two powerful broad-spectrum actives, abamectin and levamisole, to provide a more powerful parasite control solution for farmers. ECLIPSE is the only cattle endectocide in Australia with a registered label claim to control ML and LEV resistant worms. No other cattle pour-on is more effective against parasite resistance. ECLIPSE features* • Delivers simultaneously a full abamectin dose and a full levamisole dose to provide combination efficacy against major parasite species • The only cattle pour-on with a registered claim to control resistant worms • Delivers better field performance than single active endectocides • Unsurpassed control over Cooperia and Ostertagia species • Convenient low 1 ml per 20 kg dose rate Proven results ECLIPSE has been tested and proven in numerous trials in Australia and New Zealand to control cattle worm burdens even where resistance -- including moxidectin and doramectin resistance -- is present. Studies12 have shown that ECLIPSE was >99% effective at reducing faecal egg counts and worm counts of mixed worm infections of cattle, including: • ML-resistant Cooperia spp (inc C. oncophora), Haemonchus placei and Trichostrongylus spp. (including ivermectin, doramectin, and moxidectin resistant strains) and • Levamisole-resistant Ostertagia ostertagi, T.axei, Trichuris spp., and Oesophagostomum spp. Other studies13 similarly demonstrate the high efficacy of ECLIPSE in controlling worm burdens where resistance to all 3 drench groups (ML, BZ, LEV) is present. An example of these results is shown in graph 1. These studies clearly demonstrate that using ECLIPSE can deliver increased efficacy over single-active drenches.
