There’s always better value at CRT. Much has been written about the need or otherwise to control diamondback moth (cabbage moth) in canola. In some seasons, DBM are a no- show and in other seasons they arrive but disappear with a decent shower of rain. However, some years they can decimate the crop and all the money and time spent on the tractor seeding, controlling weeds and applying fertiliser returns next to nothing. There is no doubt that in the years that DBM turn up in plague proportions, their timely control yields handsome rewards – but the issue has been getting access to products that consistently work. Dow AgroSciences Development Manager for Insecticides, Paul Downard, commented “A fact sheet from the GRDC reports that in Western Australia, yield losses of up to 80% have been recorded. More commonly, 30% of yield potential is lost when DBM is not controlled. With canola grossing $500/tonne or more, and an industry average yield of 1.5 tonne/ha, DBM can cause $250/ha damage. ” Canola growers around Australia now have an effective new option which they can turn to and, what’s more, it is fully registered and already has an excellent track record against the target pest – DBM . SuccessTM NEO Insecticide from Dow AgroSciences controls DBM and all other major caterpillar pests of canola. Unlike the older broad-spectrum products (synthetic pyrethroids and organophosphates), Success NEO controls even insecticide-resistant DBM. It is IPM-compatible and has a benign environmental and toxicological profile. Success NEO has trans-laminar activity (it moves through the leaf from one side to the other) but it is not systemic in the plant. Good coverage is therefore necessary which means robust water rates and medium sized spray droplets must be used. In tall crops and those with dense canopies, it may be very difficult to get adequate coverage low down in the crop so speak to your CRT agronomist about what techniques can be used for effective control. Success NEO will control new caterpillar infestations for several days after application. It also has some activity against DBM eggs and moths. Success NEO can be applied by ground-rig, or from an aircraft, to canola from seedling stage through to flowering crop. It has a 14 day harvest/ wind-rowing withholding period. Significant expansion of varieties tolerant of the Clearfield imidazolinone chemistry have evolved in more recent times, providing growers with a range of options and varieties with more desirable agronomic characteristics compared with those initially released.
